Govan is one of the most famous areas of Glasgow due to the influence of shipbuilding, football and culture.
In recent years, as the shipbuilding industry has declined, Govan has been scoring high in the Scottish Government’s ‘index of multiple deprivation’ and they rank in the bottom 10% of communities in the country in terms of deprivation.
Yet Govan is still full of good people – 30,000 in the area as a whole – proud of their community and with a heart to see it continue to thrive.
Sadly, there are only a few gospel-preaching churches for such a vast amount of people.
Hope for Govan
The Lord has provided us with a great opportunity to work again with Harper Church (a church in neighbouring Plantation) to replant what was ‘Grace Govan’ into the heart of the Govan community.
Grace Govan has struggled in recent years to engage with the community and a number of months ago their pastor got in touch with us to see if we could help them before they had to close their doors as a church. In conversations with them and the elders of Harper Church it seemed right that the remaining members of Grace Govan be given the opportunity to join Harper Church.
Meanwhile, 20schemes and Harper are going to work together to re-plant the church into a more strategic part of Govan (right in the heart of the community) where there are only a few churches sharing the gospel to a large area and population.
An answer to prayer!
Thank you for your prayers for a church planter to lead this new plant. We have now appointed David Childs, an experienced Scottish pastor, who will head up the Govan project!
Harper Church have agreed to work with us to disciple David in their own church until the time comes when he and a team move into a new premises in Govan.
There is still a great need for more people, prayers and finances to make this new work possible. Explore more below and please support if you can!
Current needs for prayer:
- For new planter David Childs to embed in Harper Church and lead the new plant into Govan.
- People to join the team and give themselves to reach the many lost souls of Govan with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- A building space in the heart of Govan to be identified where we can effectively minister from.
- Partner churches to come onboard and help pray for and financially support the new work. (Find out more about church partnerships )
