Govan is one of the most famous areas of Glasgow due to the influence of shipbuilding, football culture, and evidence of Christian worship dating back to AD500.
In recent years, as the shipbuilding industry has declined, Govan has been scoring high in the Scottish Government’s ‘index of multiple deprivation’ and they now rank in the bottom 10% of communities in the country in terms of deprivation.
Yet Govan is still full of good people – 30,000 in the area as a whole – proud of their community and with a heart to see it continue to thrive.
Sadly, there are only a few gospel-preaching churches for such a vast amount of people.
Hope for Govan
The Lord has provided us with a great opportunity to work again with Harper Church (a church in neighbouring Plantation) to replant what was ‘Grace Govan’ into the heart of the Govan community.
After struggling in recent years to engage with the community Grace Govan has finally closed its doors for the last time. In conversations with them and the elders of Harper Church, it seemed right that the remaining members of Grace Govan be given the opportunity to join Harper Church.
Meanwhile, 20schemes and Harper are working together to re-plant the church into a more central and strategic part of Govan in the heart of the community.
An answer to prayer!
We have now appointed David Childs, an experienced Scottish pastor who along with his wife Diane, has moved into Govan to establish a presence in the community before relaunching Govan Church.
David has joined the leadership team at Harper Church as an elder until the time comes when he and a team move into new premises in Govan.

There is still a great need for a church planter to move into Govan and more people to form an effective church planting team. To make this new work possible we need your prayers and financial backing. At this moment, funding for Govan is a top priority if we are to recruit the right people for this team. Please consider being a part of this exciting new work by either giving or coming.
Current needs for prayer:
- For new planter David Childs to embed in Harper Church and lead the new plant into Govan.
- People to join the team and give themselves to reach the many lost souls of Govan with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- A building space in the heart of Govan to be identified where we can effectively minister from.
- Partner churches to come onboard and help pray for and financially support the new work. (Find out more about church partnerships )
