Charleston

Charleston is a scheme in the west end of Dundee with a population of just over 4,500 people. Like most housing schemes in Scotland, it has high unemployment, a high crime rate, and high instances of drug and alcohol abuse.

Around 35% of the residents in Charleston are unemployed and 60% of them live in the bracket of the 15% most socially deprived people in Scotland.

This is an area of great social need but the greatest need is spiritual.

The people of Charleston need the truth and hope of the gospel more than anything else.

Hope for Charleston

In 2017, St Peter’s Free Church of Scotland began to assemble a planting team, led by Andy Robertson. Then in 2019, 20schemes and the Free Church partnered together in the work in Charleston.

Charleston Community Church have not yet launched and are in the planting phase. They have recently rented an old building in the scheme that used to be the post office. After renovation this building is now used as the basis for ministry throughout the week, serving as a place for people to drop in, a café, an office and a base for Sunday Bible study for the residents of Charleston.

There have been a number of locals attending Sunday services with a couple of them recently making professions of faith. There are also a variety of youth programmes for babies to teenagers.

“We want to be a church made up of people from Charleston that will do four key things: REACH the lost with the gospel, TEACH people how to live obediently to Jesus, TRAIN future gospel leaders and SEND them out to other parts of Dundee and Scotland.”

Andy Robertson

  • Please pray for wisdom for the team as they disciple people struggling with complex issues in regards to mental health, drug and alcohol addictions, and past hurts.
  • Pray for the church as they grow in number but as people have moved on too – pray for. a consistent base of mature believers.
  • Pray for their Crossroads Bible study group for those struggling with addiction, that those who come might put their trust in the living hope found in Jesus.
  • Pray for the many unbelievers in Charleston, that this church might be bold in sharing the one true gospel with them.
