Lewis and Rosie Campbell, who moved to Torry in the summer of 2016, have joined the local United Free Church of Scotland to lead this church planting initiative. Torry, as a whole, has a population of around 10,000 people, however the Tullos/Balnagask area, which is the focus of the church plant, has a population of 3,600.

Torry is a mixed community with many locals and people from Eastern Europe. The people of Torry have a great pride and a strong sense of local community that at times makes it feel separate from Aberdeen city. However, behind this, there are many social problems in Torry particularly relating to high crime rates (622 per 10,000 people) and high percentages of alcohol and drug related issues. Tullos/Balnagask also lacks local services and community social hubs.

The Scottish Government ranks the area as one of the ‘Most Deprived’ areas of Scotland (according to the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation). The SIMD found that in Tullos/Balnagask:

  • 24% of people are ‘income deprived’ (almost double Scottish average)
  • 17% of people are ‘employment deprived’ (compared to 13% Scottish average)
  • 19% of people are on prescribed medication for mental health (almost triple Scottish average)
  • 21% of people live in housing classed as overcrowded

The United Free church, located in ‘Old Torry’, has the desire to focus Tullos/Balnagask for ministry and outreach because of its lack of an established local church. With assistance from the church and training from 20schemes, the Campbells will build relationships with people in this area, spreading the gospel and establishing a church planting team.
